Why should you include kale in your smoothie

It’s popularity has soared in recent years as has its reputation as a superfood.  We use our own organic kale in our green smoothies at Honestly Farm Kitchen, it adds an incredible flavour as well as being packed with all kinds of goodies.

What is kale?

It’s a member of the brassicaceae family of plants, which includes vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, bok choy, and brussel sprouts. Kale is packed with a wealth of beneficial micronutrients and is fat free, sugar free, and low in calories, the ultimate health food.

Here are 5 reasons to include kale in your smoothies.

1. Kale is a great source of minerals

Kale is high in minerals like calcium, which is vital for cellular function and bone health, and magnesium which can help prevent type 2 diabetes and heart disease. It also contains high amounts of potassium crucial for heart health.

2.It’s great for your eyesight

A 1-cup serving of fresh kale contains over 20% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin A, which supports eye health and is vital for vision.  Kale is also rich in antioxidants that can help to reduce your risk of macular degeneration and other age-related eye diseases.

3.Kale is packed with antioxidants and fights inflammation

It’s extremely high in antioxidants which help to prevent free radicals from damaging our bodies.  It contains quercetin and kaempferol in high amounts, kale has many anticancer and heart-healthy nutrients.

4.Kale is great for your heart

We all know that too much cholesterol can lead to all kinds of health issues. Kale can help reduce cholesterol by binding bile acids that contribute to higher cholesterol layers. Studies have also shown that juicing kale can improve or lower the risk of coronary artery disease, a good reason to include kale in your smoothie!

5.One cup of kale has more vitamin c than an orange, it’s a great source of vitamins

Hidden in those dark green leaves are a powerhouse of vitamins – B6, C, and K, not to mention a great source of beta-carotene, an antioxidant which our body converts to vitamin A.

Vitamin K helps with the formation of blood-clots, kale is one of the best sources of vitamin k, in one cup of kale there is 7 times the daily recommended amount!
