It’s been busy (and foggy!) on the farm. The team have been making sure everything is ready for the Winter, getting the animals and plants cosy for the unpredictable months to come.
These days, the salad leaves are covered in fleece when there is a chance of frost. We love this photo of the Claytonia first thing on Thursday morning. Claytonia is also known as Miner’s Lettuce. Miners used to eat this salad leaf to prevent scurvy due to its high Vitamin C content! With a heart-shaped leaf, long stem and edible flowers, it is a good source of beta-carotene and protein.
Our cattle are settled into their new Winter sheds. Our sheds provide more than twice the amount of space per animal than conventional farming. There are no slats, so no slurry, the cattle rest on deep beds of straw, keeping them warm, happy and comfortable.
We have a new ram in with the ewes (seen here not looking overly interested in his new girlfriend…). He’s wearing a raddle, essentially a crayon on a harness, so we can tell which of the ewes he has… spent time with.
